Abstract

This article discusses the role of the Batanghari River during the Dutch colonial period until independence. This research aims to identify the condition of the Batanghari River during the Dutch colonial period which experienced changes from the previous period until independence. The method used in writing this research uses a qualitative research method that uses a descriptive research approach. The types of sources used in writing this research are sources from literature studies with historical analysis techniques using interpretation of historical facts which include books, documents, journals and observations related to the role of the Batanghari River during the Dutch colonial period until independence. The results of this research show that from ancient times, from the colonial era to the independence era, the history and development of the Jambi area was heavily influenced by the Batanghari River. This river served as the main commercial transit route and a link for infrastructure development to support power throughout the colonial period. After independence, the role of the Batanghari River focused more on the needs and interests of the surrounding community, with infrastructure development aimed at improving the standard of living of the local community.
